Last Updated: August 16, 2025
Thank you for using Movie Browser ("the App"). This Privacy Policy describes how your information is handled when you use our application. Our core principle is to collect as little information as possible. The App is designed to work locally on your device without requiring personal data.
NOTE: This website and our macos app "My Movie Browser" does not endorse, facilitate or provide any kind of streaming service or pirated content, This app only works with your local folder of files and will only be available through the Apple mac app store, NO DOWNLOADS ARE OR WILL BE AVAILABLE THROUGH THIS WEBSITE. Currently under review by Apple team, not available yet.
1. Information We Do Not Collect
We do not collect, store, or have access to any of your personal information. The App does not include user accounts, analytics, tracking, or advertising. We do not ask for your name, email address, location, or any other personally identifiable information.
2. How the App Handles Your Data
The App's functionality is centered around accessing the movie folder you select on your device. Here is a breakdown of how your data is handled:
- Local File Access: The App requires you to select a folder on your device containing your movie files. Access to this folder is granted solely by you through the standard macOS/iPadOS file picker. The App only reads the filenames within this folder to identify your movies. It does not modify, delete, or upload your files.
- Folder Path Storage (Security-Scoped Bookmark): To provide the convenience of remembering your last-selected folder, the App saves a secure "bookmark" to this folder in its local
UserDefaults
on your device. This bookmark is a security feature of macOS and iPadOS that allows the App to regain access to the folder upon relaunch without you having to select it every time. This data remains on your device and is never transmitted to us.
- Image Cache: To improve performance and reduce network usage, the App downloads and saves movie posters to a local cache folder within the App's sandboxed container on your device. This cache can be cleared at any time using the "Refresh Posters" button in the App.
3. Third-Party Services:
To fetch movie posters, the App sends a request to the third-party TMDB API (The Movie Database). This request contains the movie title and, if available, the year, which are extracted from your filenames.
- No personal data is sent with this request.
- The information sent is limited to the cleaned movie title and year (e.g., "The Matrix 1999").
- We recommend you review the TMDB API's privacy policy to understand how they handle this data. As of this policy's date, the TMDB API service does not require user authentication from within our app.
- "This application uses TMDB and the TMDB APIs but is not endorsed, certified, or otherwise approved by TMDB."
4. Children's Privacy
The App does not knowingly collect any information from children under the age of 13. Since we do not collect any personal information at all, we believe the App is safe for all audiences.
